What Winter Springs is known for
Winter Springs sits on the south shore of Lake Jesup, about 20 minutes northeast of downtown Orlando. It is known for its city parks, the Cross Seminole Trail, and a Tree City USA title the city has held for over 35 years. Big community days like Hometown Harvest, Winter Wonderland and the Central Florida Scottish Highland Games all happen at Central Winds Park.
Lake Jesup was named on May 22, 1837, after General Thomas S. Jesup, and steamboat wharves on the lake once shipped local citrus north. The town incorporated as North Orlando in 1959 with about 600 residents, took in 3,400 acres of the Winter Springs Development Company in 1962, and adopted the name Winter Springs in 1972. The Winter Springs Town Center opened in 2002. A suburban city of planned neighborhoods, golf course streets and big oak trees, popular with families and commuters working in Orlando, Oviedo and the UCF area. Weekends revolve around ballfields, the pickleball courts, the dog park and the trail.
