What Northbridge is known for
Northbridge is best known for Whitinsville, the mill village where the Whitin Machine Works grew into the world's largest textile machine maker. Whitinsville is one of six sites in Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park. The Blackstone and Mumford Rivers run through town, and many old mill buildings still stand.
Northbridge was part of the colonial Mendon grant of 1667, split off with Uxbridge in 1727, and was founded as its own town in 1772. The Whitin-Fletcher family opened the Northbridge Cotton Mill in 1809, and John C. Whitin's workshop grew into the Whitin Machine Works, where more than 5,600 people once worked. The Whitins built nearly 1,000 worker homes between the 1820s and 1920s and sold their town holdings after labor unrest in the late 1940s. Whitinsville is still the population and commercial center of Northbridge, with Church Street shops, brick mills and company-built housing. The rest of town mixes smaller mill villages, farms and conservation land.
