What Merritt Island is known for
Merritt Island sits between the Indian River and the Banana River, directly south of Kennedy Space Center and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Locals know it for boating, canal-front homes, rocket launches overhead and its Indian River citrus past.
Spanish explorer Alvaro Mexia visited the Ais people here in 1605 and drew the island on his map. From the mid-1800s the island grew around Indian River oranges and pineapples, then boomed in the 1950s and 1960s as NASA expanded next door. The wildlife refuge was established in 1963, and sculptor Louis VanDercar built Annie the dragon at Dragon Point in 1971; she collapsed into the lagoon in August 2002. An unincorporated, water-focused community of space industry workers, boaters, families and retirees. Days revolve around the rivers, the causeways and launch viewing from the backyard.
