What Melbourne is known for
Melbourne is the Harbor City of Florida's Space Coast, set on the Indian River Lagoon with bridges out to the barrier island beaches. It has two walkable historic districts, Downtown Melbourne on Crane Creek and the Eau Gallie Arts District, plus Melbourne Orlando International Airport and major employers like L3Harris Technologies.
The town was named after Melbourne, Australia, in honor of Cornthwaite John Hector, the area's first postmaster. The railroad arrived in 1893, a 1919 fire destroyed the Front Street businesses, and a new district grew on New Haven Avenue during the 1920s land boom. Eau Gallie, founded by William Henry Gleason in 1860 and Brevard's county seat from 1874 to 1878, joined Melbourne in 1969. A mix of L3Harris and aerospace workers, retirees and families relocating from colder states. Days revolve around the lagoon, the beaches across the causeways, and patio dining in the two historic districts.
