What Leicester is known for
Leicester is a Worcester County town made up of old mill villages: Leicester Center, Cherry Valley, Rochdale, Greenville, Mannville and Lakeside. It is known for its role in the Revolution, where Col. William Henshaw first used the term "minuteman," and for its hand card industry. At its peak, one-third of all hand and machine cards made in North America came from Leicester.
Leicester was purchased in 1686 by Roxbury businessmen and incorporated on February 15, 1713. The Nipmuc name for the land was Towtaid, meaning "open field." Pliny Earle of Leicester built the carding machine for Samuel Slater's Pawtucket mill, and the town's textile era ended in 1991 when Worcester Spinning and Finishing in Cherry Valley closed. About 11,000 people live here, and most commute to Worcester and other nearby cities. Daily life mixes working farms, village pizza shops and golf with a historic town common that hosts summer concerts.
