What Deltona is known for
Deltona is the largest city in Volusia County, with an estimated population of about 100,000. It sits between Daytona Beach and Orlando and serves as a large home base for commuters to both. The land is rolling and dotted with lakes, and the city fronts the north shore of Lake Monroe on the St. Johns River.
The Mackle Brothers opened Deltona Lakes in November 1962, naming it by combining parts of DeLand and Daytona. The first residents moved in during April 1963, and the population passed 52,000 by 1991. Residents voted to incorporate in September 1995 after failed attempts in 1987 and 1990, and the city became official on December 31, 1995. Deltona is a suburban city of single-family streets, lakes and ball fields, where many residents drive I-4 to jobs in Orlando or Daytona Beach. Its Hispanic community has grown fast, and Puerto Rican and Latin food and the long-running Latin Arts and Music Festival are part of daily life.
