What Daytona Beach is known for
Daytona Beach is the home of Daytona International Speedway and the Daytona 500. Its hard-packed sand beach, where cars are still allowed in set zones, gave the town its racing roots. Two huge motorcycle rallies, Bike Week in March and Biketoberfest in October, fill Main Street every year.
Ohio businessman Mathias Day built the area's first hotel in 1874, and Daytona was incorporated in 1876 under his name. Mary McLeod Bethune opened a school for girls here in 1904 that grew into Bethune-Cookman University. Bill France Sr. founded NASCAR and opened Daytona International Speedway in 1959, and the city marks its 150th anniversary in 2026. Daytona Beach mixes year-round residents, retirees, college students and race fans. Beachside streets stay busy with tourists and bikers, while the golf and master-planned communities out by LPGA Boulevard feel quiet and suburban.

I-95 and I-4 meet at the west edge of the city. US-92 (International Speedway Boulevard), US-1, Nova Road and LPGA Boulevard carry local traffic, and SR A1A runs along the beach.
Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB) is in the city, a few minutes from the Speedway. Orlando International (MCO) is about 1 hour away.
