What Cocoa Beach is known for
Cocoa Beach is the best known beach town on Florida's Space Coast, about 45 minutes east of Orlando. It is famous for surfing, the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier, the Ron Jon Surf Shop flagship, and some of the closest rocket launch views in the county.
Attorney Gus Edwards established the Town of Cocoa Beach on June 5, 1925, three years after the first bridge to the island opened in 1922. Banana River Naval Air Station opened in 1939 and became Patrick Air Force Base in 1948, and the town became a city in 1957. Crowds watched Alan Shepard's Freedom 7 launch from the beach in 1961, and the Cocoa Beach Pier was built in 1962. A small beach town on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Banana River, with surfers, boaters, retirees and space industry workers sharing the same streets. Downtown has murals, coffee shops, bakeries and tiki bars within walking distance of the sand.
