What Cape Canaveral is known for
Cape Canaveral is a small beachside city on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Banana River. It sits next to Port Canaveral, home to seven major cruise lines, and a short drive from Kennedy Space Center, so rocket launches are part of daily life. Its beaches have free parking at most street-end crossovers.
Congress authorized a deep water port here in 1929, and work on Port Canaveral started in 1950 and finished in 1953. The modern City of Cape Canaveral incorporated in 1963 as the space program grew next door. The 151-foot Cape Canaveral Lighthouse still guides mariners today from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Aerospace and Space Force workers live here for the direct route to Kennedy Space Center, alongside condo owners who want to walk to the ocean for less than Cocoa Beach prices. Days revolve around the beach, the Cove restaurants at the port and watching launches from the sand.
